Craven Cottage is one of the most iconic and historically significant football stadiums in England, serving as the home ground for Fulham Football Club since 1896. Located in Fulham, West London, on the banks of the River Thames, it is renowned for its unique charm, traditional architecture, and picturesque setting.

History and Origins

The site where Craven Cottage now stands was originally a hunting lodge built in 1780 by William Craven, the sixth Baron Craven. The lodge was destroyed by fire in 1888, leaving the area largely derelict. Fulham FC, founded in 1879, moved to the site in 1896, initially playing on a makeshift pitch.

The stadium as we largely know it today was designed by Archibald Leitch, a prominent Scottish architect responsible for many famous football grounds across the UK. Leitch's distinctive touch is most evident in the "Pavilion," a charming red-brick building with a gabled roof that still stands between the Johnny Haynes Stand and the Riverside Stand. This structure, completed in 1905, is a Grade II listed building, reflecting its architectural and historical importance.

Key Features and Stands

Craven Cottage is known for its distinctive stands, each with its own character:

  • Johnny Haynes Stand (formerly the Stevenage Road Stand): Located on the northern side of the pitch, this stand is named after Fulham's legendary captain, Johnny Haynes. It's a two-tiered stand that offers excellent views of the pitch.
  • Hammersmith End: Situated behind the western goal, this stand is typically where the most vocal home supporters gather, creating an electric atmosphere. It's a single-tiered stand.
  • Putney End: Directly opposite the Hammersmith End, behind the eastern goal. This stand often houses away supporters, though a section is also allocated to home fans. Like the Hammersmith End, it's a single-tiered stand.
  • Riverside Stand: Running along the southern side of the pitch, adjacent to the River Thames. This stand has undergone significant redevelopment in recent years, transforming it into a modern, multi-tiered structure with enhanced facilities, hospitality areas, and a riverside walkway. The redevelopment aimed to increase capacity and improve the matchday experience while maintaining the stadium's unique charm.

Capacity and Atmosphere

Before the recent redevelopment, Craven Cottage had a capacity of around 25,700. The new Riverside Stand project has increased this, bringing the current capacity to over 22,000, with a final capacity of approximately 29,600 expected upon full completion.

Despite its relatively smaller size compared to many modern stadia, Craven Cottage is celebrated for its intimate atmosphere. The close proximity of the stands to the pitch allows fans to feel very much a part of the action, contributing to a vibrant and often intense matchday experience. The traditional architecture and the setting by the river give it a unique, almost nostalgic feel that many fans and visitors cherish.

Beyond Football

While primarily a football stadium, Craven Cottage's historical significance and picturesque location have also made it a venue for other events over the years, including charity matches, concerts, and corporate functions. Its status as one of London's oldest professional football grounds, combined with its architectural charm, makes it a popular destination for football tourists and enthusiasts of sports history.

In essence, Craven Cottage is more than just a football stadium; it's a piece of sporting heritage, a landmark on the River Thames, and a beloved home for Fulham FC and its supporters.
