• Initial concerns of lead poisoning have been ruled out by the Ojai Raptor Center, indicating a different cause for her critical state ³.

The Incident and Rescue

Jackie's current health crisis stemmed from an altercation with two subadult eagles earlier in July ⁴⁶. While initial reports on July 22, 2026, suggested she was underweight with no signs of physical injury, her condition deteriorated, leading to the need for a blood transfusion ⁸². The transfusion was successfully performed using blood from another eagle ².

Shadow and the Future

While Jackie is recovering, her long-time mate, Shadow, has been observed with another subadult female eagle on a tree perch ⁵. This development has garnered attention from fans who have followed the pair's nest via livestream for years ⁴⁷.

In related good news for the Big Bear bald eagles, the Friends of Big Bear Valley, which operates the popular nest live cam, announced that they successfully raised $10 million to save the eagles' habitat ⁷. This ensures the continued protection of the area Jackie and Shadow call home.
