Early Life and Education

Born on November 29, 1958, in Damongo in the Damango-Daboya Constituency of the Northern Region of Ghana, Mahama comes from a political family. His father, Emmanuel Adama Mahama, was the first Member of Parliament for the Gonja West Constituency and the first Regional Commissioner of the Northern Region during Ghana's First Republic.

Mahama received his primary education at Achimota School and then proceeded to Ghana Secondary School in Tamale. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Ghana, Legon, in 1981. He further pursued a postgraduate diploma in Communication Studies from the same university in 1986. Later, he undertook a postgraduate course in Social Psychology at the Institute of Social Sciences in Moscow, Soviet Union, specializing in the field of journalism.

Career Before Presidency

Before entering active politics, Mahama worked as a historian and a communications expert. He served as the Information, Culture, and Research Officer at the Embassy of Japan in Accra from 1991 to 1995. Following this, he worked as a Public Affairs Officer for the non-governmental organization Plan International's Ghana Country Office, where he was responsible for public relations, international relations, and sponsorship communication.

Member of Parliament

In 1996, he was elected to the Parliament of Ghana to represent the Bole Bamboi Constituency, a seat he held for three consecutive terms until 2008. During his time as an MP, he served as Deputy Minister of Communications from 1997 to 1998, and then as the substantive Minister for Communications from 1998 to 2001. As Minister, he played a significant role in the development of Ghana's telecommunications sector.

Vice President

In 2008, Mahama was chosen as the running mate to John Atta Mills for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential ticket. The ticket won the election, and Mahama became the Vice President of Ghana on January 7, 2009. During his tenure as Vice President, he also chaired the National Economic Management Team, overseeing various economic initiatives.

Presidency

Following the sudden death of President John Atta Mills on July 24, 2012, John Dramani Mahama automatically assumed the presidency, in accordance with Ghana's constitution. He completed the remainder of President Mills' term.

Later that year, he contested and won the 2012 presidential election as the candidate for the NDC, making him the first Ghanaian President to have served at all levels of political office – from MP to Vice President to President. His presidency was marked by significant infrastructure development projects, including improvements in road networks, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions.

Post-Presidency and Current Political Role

Mahama sought re-election in the 2016 general election but lost to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), becoming the first incumbent president in Ghana's Fourth Republic to not win a second term.

Despite his defeat, Mahama remains a dominant figure in Ghanaian politics. He was again chosen as the NDC's presidential candidate for the 2020 general election, which he also lost to President Akufo-Addo. He is currently the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the upcoming 2024 general election, making him a central figure in Ghana's current political discourse and a strong contender for the presidency once more.
