He picked up a prop .44 Magnum revolver that was supposed to be loaded with blanks. In a moment of what was later described as either a prank or an act of frustration, he placed the muzzle of the gun against his temple and pulled the trigger.

While blanks are not intended to be lethal, the muzzle blast from a .44 Magnum at close range can still cause severe injury. The blank cartridge ejected a plastic projectile that struck Hexum in the head, causing a massive skull fracture and brain damage. He was rushed to UCLA Medical Center, where he remained on life support for several days. On October 18, 1984, at the age of 26, Jon-Erik Hexum was pronounced dead.
