Meaning of the Stotram (Brief Overview)
- Na (Nagendra haraya): Salutations to Shiva, who wears the king of snakes (Naga) as a garland, has three eyes, is adorned with sacred ash, and is the great Lord (Maheshwara). He is eternal, pure, and clad in the directions (Digambara).
- Ma (Mandakini salila): Salutations to Shiva, who is bathed by the waters of the Mandakini (Ganges) and smeared with sandalwood paste. He is the Lord of Nandi and the ganas (attendants). He is worshipped with many flowers, especially Mandara.
- Shi (Shivaya Gauri): Salutations to Shiva, who is auspicious, like the sun to the lotus-face of Gauri (Parvati). He is the destroyer of Daksha's sacrifice, has a blue throat (Neelakantha), and has a bull (Vrushabha) as his emblem.
- Va (Vashishta kumbhodbhava): Salutations to Shiva, who is worshipped by great sages like Vashishta, Agastya (Kumbhodbhava), and Gautama. He has the moon, sun, and fire as his eyes.
- Ya (Yaksha swaroopaya): Salutations to Shiva, who has the form of a Yaksha (celestial being), has matted locks, holds the Pinaka bow in his hand, and is eternal. He is divine, the Lord, and clad in the directions.
The concluding verse states that whoever recites this sacred five-syllable hymn in the presence of Shiva attains Shiva's abode and rejoices with Shiva.
