🔥 Gündem New Monkey Species Discovered in Congo Rainforest

A new species of monkey, characterized by its striking pinkish-orange lips and a black face, has been confirmed in the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) ¹³⁷. This discovery was made by researchers, including those from Yale, who helped describe the new species ².

Key Characteristics of the New Species

The newly identified monkey species, scientifically named Colobus congoensis, exhibits several distinctive features:

• Appearance: It has a black fur coat and, most notably, vivid pinkish-orange lips ¹³⁷. It also possesses a distinct orange patch around its mouth ⁶.
• Habitat: This species lives high in the forest canopies of the Democratic Republic of Congo ²⁵.
• Vocalization: It is known to produce a deep, croaky roar and snorts ⁵⁶.
• Scientific Recognition: Researchers, including primatologist Kate Detwiler, co-author of the paper describing the species, confirmed that multiple lines of evidence pointed to it being a new species ⁴. The scientific name C. congoensis was chosen to acknowledge the rich biodiversity of the Congo Basin ⁴.

This discovery highlights the ongoing biodiversity in the Congo rainforest and the importance of continued research and conservation efforts in the region ⁵⁸.
