🔥 Gündem Pookkalam: The Vibrant Flower Carpets of Onam

Pookkalam is an intricate and colorful floral design or arrangement created on the floor, primarily using various types of colorful flowers ²⁴. It is a compound word derived from "pook," meaning flower, and "kalam," meaning color or design ⁴.

Cultural Significance and Tradition

Pookkalam holds significant cultural importance, especially in the South Indian state of Kerala, where it is an integral part of the Onam festival celebrations ³.

• Onam Festival: Pookkalams are traditionally laid out in the front yard of homes during the ten-day Onam festival. The ground is cleaned, and an earthen floor is prepared for the floral arrangement ³.
• Daily Ritual: The ritual of making these flower mats continues for all ten days of Onam. Designing typically starts from the day of Atham (the first day of Onam) and is completed by Thiruvonam day (the tenth day) ⁶.
• Evolution of Design: On the first day of Atham, a simple Pookkalam is made using 'thumba' flowers. As the festival progresses, more flowers are added, and the designs become more elaborate ³.
• Worship: Idols of Mahabali and Vishnu are often placed in the center of the Pookkalam and worshipped ⁶.
• Size: The diameter of a Pookkalam typically ranges from four to five meters ⁶.
