United Airlines is introducing a new Economy Plus seating concept on its upcoming fleet of 50 Airbus A321XLR aircraft, designed to offer passengers more space and comfort ¹⁴⁶. This innovative design replaces the traditional middle seat in a specific row of Economy Plus with a shared table, providing passengers with extra elbow room and a dedicated surface ¹³⁷.

This "open middle seat" concept is a first for the industry and is akin to the "Eurobusiness" model, where the middle seat is intentionally left empty or repurposed ³⁷. The new A321XLRs will feature a three-cabin configuration, including Polaris business class, Premium Plus, and Economy Plus, in addition to standard economy seats ²⁵. Specifically, the updated seat map indicates 12 Premium Plus seats, 36 Economy Plus seats (some of which will feature this new design), and 82 economy seats ².
