Varalakshmi Vratham is a significant Hindu festival celebrated by married women, primarily in the South Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and parts of Maharashtra and Odisha. The festival is dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth, prosperity, and auspiciousness. 'Vara' in Varalakshmi means "boon" or "blessing," and 'Lakshmi' refers to the goddess of wealth. Thus, Varalakshmi is the goddess who grants boons.

The festival is observed on the Friday preceding the full moon (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Shravana (which usually falls in July or August). It is believed that worshipping Goddess Varalakshmi on this day is equivalent to worshipping Ashtalakshmi – the eight forms of Lakshmi: Dhana Lakshmi (wealth), Dhanya Lakshmi (food and grains), Dhairya Lakshmi (courage), Veera Lakshmi (valor), Santana Lakshmi (progeny), Vijaya Lakshmi (victory), Vidya Lakshmi (knowledge), and Gaja Lakshmi (elephants and royalty). Women observe a fast and perform elaborate rituals, including special pujas and offerings, to seek blessings for the well-being, prosperity, and longevity of their husbands and family members. The celebration often involves decorating the idol or image of the goddess, preparing traditional sweets and savories, and inviting other married women (sumangalis) for a feast and to exchange gifts.
